Monday, 28th May, 2001 has now gone down in history as one of Stalybridge's days to remember - on a par with Stalybridge Carnival Day and the Whit Friday Band Contest.  The official opening of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, the festival that followed and the firework display at the end of the evening were absolutely wonderful.

The Market Hall is to re-open this week for viewing in time for the celebrations next week, and an exhibition of works depicting the area is on display at the Astley Cheetham Art Gallery.

A fire at the Wellington Public House near to Staley Wharf has unfortunately closed this venue until refurbishment can be completed.

Today ( 10th April) my son and I watched one of the first canal boats navigate through the lock at Huddersfield Road.  It was a grand site!

Tesco's Foodstore and the petrol station adjacent, are now open and attracting lots of custom.  The new housing flats on Trinity Street have new tenants, and at long last the town is beginning to look tidy again after all the building work.

St. Pauls Church on Huddersfield Road has undergone many changes recently, which include changes to the inside of the church which have made available rooms for local community groups.  The graveyard behind the church is in the middle of being redeveloped and a much improved entrance and carparking have been made available.

Plans have finally been revealed for the Market Hall.  It has been closed now for several months whilst the Council decided what its new use should be.  The Market Hall is now to become Stalybridge Town Hall with a new upper level housing council offices and community groups.   Good news for this popular building!

Unfortunately, some of the newly opened canal towpath are unaccessable due to the 'Foot and Mouth' restrictions now in place throughout the United Kingdom.  At this time of writing, the towpath is open as far as Mossley, if you are taking a walk.   Please check at www.tameside.gov.uk for the current status on this situation.

The Huddersfield Narrow Canal runs for twenty miles.   It joins the Ashton Canal from Portland Basin in Ashton under Lyne, through the Pennine Hills to the centre of Huddersfield, where it becomes the Huddersfield Broad Canal.
