A DAY TO REMEMBER BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY 26th May, 2001. |
The day started off being a typical bank holiday - wet and dull. But that wasn't going to dampen any spirits because the official opening of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal was to take place along with a celebration festival. The weather brightened up and the crowds began to form. The street entertainers were kept busy raising miles of smiles on the faces of the general public, whilst canal boats gathered - beautifully decked out with flowers. Boat rides along the canal were available for 50p. The Labour Club, which is adjacent the carpark at Tescos store, but on a barbeque with a 'real ale' tent, outdoor disco and performing artists . The hotdog, burger and doughnut vendors were busy. Stalls were bountiful, raising money for local charities. A stage had been built and amoungst the artists performing were Stax of Soul who were marvellous. Local councillors performed the opening ceremony and the entertainment continued until 10pm with many people dancing in the streets. A fantastic firework display topped off the proceedings - better than Disneyland I heard some say! New friends were made and old friends saw each other for the first time in years.
All in all - a day to remember.
