The Lock Gates Sundial.

Many people don't quite understand what this structure in the town centre by the canal actually is...a huge 'Y' surrounded by stones....useful for sitting on whilst waiting for a bus.....I too used to think this also.....until whilst waiting for the bus on a sunny afternoon....I actually sat on the '12' stone and saw a shadow cast in front of me, pointing to the '4' stone ....yes it was 4pm in the afternoon...I then realised this is one of the wonders of our world.....that this actually does work...

In 2008, The Sundial, created by artist Alan Dawes was officially dedicated to the town.
Located in the town centre, adjacent to the Civic Hall in Armentiers Square - it is a modern depiction of a pair of lock gates, the balance being all of the lock gates are angled in such a way that the main north facing beam forms a giant working sundial in the Square and when the sun shines, you will see the sundial in action and you should be able to tell the time from it.

The artist has designed an innovative piece which has become a talking point. It is believed to be the biggest working sundial in the country and it’s provided the town with a wonderful focal point.

The children from St. Peter’s School, Stalybridge, placed items into a time capsule and the Wooden Canal Boat Society, Tame Valley Brass Band, Holy Community Church and all the staff from Tameside Council have been part of this project.
